Facebook and Twitter meet iTunes

Ping, a social network for Apple’s iTunes users, was unveiled Wednesday by CEO Steve Jobs. Jobs said there are more than 160 million iTunes accounts now in 23 countries. The iTunes Store “is clearly the No. 1 online media store in the world,” he said. “Today we’re really excited to launch iTunes 10,” which includes Ping. “It’s a social network all about music. You can follow people and be followed,” Jobs said, with “just one click.”

Pings looks like a particular social media, because it’s very thematic. The music is the theme line that joins all the members. Social media are usually omnivore creatures and it will be interesting to see how such a specific community evolves.

Hear you on Ping.
