Twitter Social Metamedium for VMAs

Metamedia was coined in the writings of Marshall McLuhan and referred to the fact that new technologies were affecting so much the message, that new media became part of the message itself. A more drastic way (still coined by McLuhan) to describe that phenomena, is by the famous phrase ‘The medium is the message’.

In this sense the Twitter Tracker that Stamen Design developed for the channel’s Video Music Awards, uses Twitter as a metamedium.
The online trend that the Twitter Tracker is supposed to generate for the VMAs (the message), is based only on revealing dynamics and data of Twitter (the medium), responsible for the trend itself.

How is it possible?
Why it wouldn’t be the same coolness to publish Google Analytics results to generate online awareness? Why it wouldn’t work the same way to broadcast television audiences charts as an advertising?
Because Twitter is a cool trend itself. Associating Twitter dynamics with a cool event like VMAs, means connecting  at an emotional level with the target and fully catching its insight.

That was a good read. Thanks. This is why social media works. Emotional engagement is what hooks people and marketers can monitor the reaction and act upon that insight.

By the way it caught my attention, a few days ago the exact same comment was submitted to my blog. But my blog is in Turkish. I believe it’s a bot.
